There are sessions where every location is chosen because it looks beautiful.
Then there are sessions where every location means something.
Holden’s senior session was definitely the second.
We started the evening on his grandfather’s property, tucked down a quiet dirt road surrounded by woods that have been in the family for generations. It was one of those places you can’t recreate with a Google search. Every turn had another backdrop, another patch of light filtering through the trees, and another reminder that sometimes the best locations are the ones that already hold your story.
Mother Nature decided to keep things interesting. A summer storm rolled through just as we were getting started, sending us into the garage to wait it out while lightning cracked overhead and rain poured down. Thankfully, the weather eventually moved on, leaving behind cooler air, gorgeous light, and… roughly a million mosquitoes. Thankfully, those don’t show up in the final gallery.
Meaningful Locations Make Better Senior Pictures
My seniors usually fall into one of two camps.
The first group knows exactly what they want. They’ve been saving inspiration for months, already have a list of dream locations, and come to me with a clear vision for their session.
The second group has absolutely no idea where they want to go.
If that’s you, don’t worry. Honestly, it’s more common than you might think.
Whenever a senior tells me they have no clue where they want their pictures taken, my first question is almost always the same:
“What places are meaningful to you?”
Maybe it’s your grandparents’ property. Maybe it’s the football field where you’ve spent countless Friday nights, your favorite fishing spot, a downtown you’ve grown up exploring, or the beach your family visits every summer.
Starting there gives us something much more important than a pretty backdrop. It gives us a story to build your session around.
That’s exactly how Holden’s session came together. His grandfather’s property gave us towering trees, winding dirt roads, and beautiful green spaces all within a short walk. Instead of bouncing from location to location, we were able to create a gallery with a variety of looks in a place that already meant something to him.
Ending the Night on the Football Field
From there, we headed to Lawton High School’s football field.
Football has been a big part of Holden’s high school experience, so there wasn’t a better way to wrap up his senior session.
The storm that delayed us earlier ended up giving us one incredible sunset. As the sky lit up behind the field, the helmet came out, the football came out, and somewhere along the way, a Batman mask made an appearance.
I asked zero questions.
Those little personality moments are some of my favorite images from any senior session because they’re genuine. They’re the photos that make people smile years later and instantly remember exactly who you were at seventeen.
