Every senior session tells a story.
Some stories are adventurous. Others are quiet, thoughtful, and filled with meaningful little details.
Emma’s session was a beautiful reminder that the smallest things often become the most memorable.
From the very beginning, every outfit, every location, and every keepsake reflected who she is. We spent the evening surrounded by wildflowers before making our way to Jean Klock Beach for one of those Lake Michigan sunsets that reminds me why I love photographing seniors in Southwest Michigan.
A Wildflower Field That Feels Different Every Season
We started the evening at one of my favorite hidden gems in Southwest Michigan, a private wildflower meadow filled with blooming native flowers, graceful willow trees, winding paths, and tall prairie grasses.
One of the reasons I return to this location so often is because no two sessions ever look alike. Within one property, we’re able to create a gallery that feels incredibly diverse simply by moving from one pocket of flowers to another, stepping beneath the willow branches, or wandering along the trails.
Emma began her session in jeans and a simple white tank before changing into the sweetest blush pink dress. The contrast between the two outfits created completely different looks while still feeling cohesive against the soft colors of the meadow.
Bringing Meaningful Keepsakes to Your Senior Session
One of my favorite parts of Emma’s session was the thought she put into the personal items she brought with her.
Along with her very first pair of pointe shoes, Emma also brought a childhood stuffed bear that has been by her side for years.
Those two simple keepsakes quietly tell the story of who she is. One represents years of dedication, discipline, and countless hours spent dancing. The other is a small piece of childhood she wanted to remember before stepping into her senior year.
I always encourage seniors to think about bringing something meaningful to their session. It doesn’t have to be elaborate. Sometimes it’s a softball glove, a guitar, a letter jacket, a family heirloom, or something that’s been loved since childhood.
Those personal touches often become the photographs that mean the most years later.
Why Jean Klock Beach Is One of My Favorite Senior Photo Locations
As golden hour approached, we made our way to Jean Klock Beach in Benton Harbor.
This is easily one of my favorite Lake Michigan locations because of how much variety it offers in such a small area.
Within a short walk, we photographed along the wooded boardwalk, surrounded by dune grasses, overlooking the shoreline, and eventually down at the water itself. Every stop created a completely different look while still telling one cohesive story.
For this part of the session, Emma changed into a beautiful teal dress that looked incredible against the warm evening light. The soft blues paired perfectly with the sandy dunes and glowing Lake Michigan sunset.
Ending the Night in Lake Michigan
If you’ve followed my work for very long, you probably know how much I love ending summer senior sessions in the water.
By that point in the evening, the nerves have disappeared.
The posing becomes effortless.
Everyone relaxes.
Instead of thinking about the camera, seniors simply enjoy the moment.
Emma laughed as the waves rolled in around her, wandered through the shoreline, and fully embraced the last few minutes of daylight. Those carefree images have a way of becoming some of my favorites because they feel less like portraits and more like memories.
